It’s what singer songwriters do: recognise real life and tell the story, and as Steve Seskin is quoted as saying, “Part of what you write in lyrics is what you don’t write.”

“There’s a saying in Nashville, ‘Paint it; don’t say it.'” — Danny Myrick

I always liked this quote I got on BBC Introducing on Radio South Live, from the Demo Panel with Phil Jackson, way back in 2010, where they do live showcases of unsigned musicians:

“The one thing I look for in a good songwriter is where a performer paints good pictures and this man does that. If you close your eyes when you listen to his lyrics, you can see those pictures – They’re there. They’re real and that’s the essence of good storytelling with a song. There’s a lot more going on behind the voice than you immediately gather. His south of the river, not Americanised, voice works very well. ” – Chris Taylor, The Greys, Brighton

Newsletter:

It’s a year since the end of the world in 2012, and I’d like to thank everyone who came out to all my shows, braving frost, snow, hail, rain, sunshine and the very real possibility of Armageddon, making the “End of the World Tour” so much fun.

2014 is looking busy already, and so I look forward to the very real pleasure of your company when I climb back in the cockpit of Sherman, the trusty Peugeot 406 and turn the planet beneath the tyres in your general direction…Enjoy the Festive Season, and accept a bit of a “Man Hug” from me.

Keeping the music real – as always
