25th Swanage Blues Festival

January 29th, 2016

25th Swanage Blues Festival to take place in March 2016

Playing the blues

Swanage Blues is a not for profit organisation, that twice a year brings a lot of exciting live music to Swanage; in March and October, thousands of blues music fans turn the town into a mini New Orleans.

A wristband for £10 gives access to the live music events throughout the town. The festival is still free really but people kindly buy at least one weekend wristband for £10 to help cover costs of organising Swanage Blues Festival. We can thank Steve Darrington for all that great work!

It is a top festival and I’ve played for a few years now and it always affords me a chance to catch up with people I haven’t seen for a while, or who come back to every festival. Playing 2 sets is fun; both of which are quite different and give me loads of space to explore the bluesy side of the acoustic guitar.

Swanage Blues Festival is on 3, 4, 5, 6 March 2016. I will be performing on Friday 4th March at 6pm and then again at 8.15pm.

It is recommended to book in advance, as Tawny’s is one of the venues that puts on both music and great food.

Fun for all this weekend

One of the top UK live music festivals in October – bring on the Blues! Great praise to Steve Darrington for the great organisation of Swanage Blues Festival.

I will be performing at Tawny’s on Friday 2nd October 2015 – 2 sets: at 6pm AND 8.15pm. Always a great acoustic gig on The Isle of Purbeck; I really enjoy playing the blues!

I always Launch a new song at Thomas Tripp gigs

It is not exactly a tradition but it always seems to work out that way; then again, I seem to have a new acoustic song or two added to the set list at every gig. The gig list is always 2 pages long and changes for every gig, with a few favourite singer songwriter pieces that are a great warm up, quite a few difficult fingerstyle ones to challenge me, a few blues numbers and even a few ad lib songs lately; odd how the audience have reacted so well to those ad lib songs, hmm!

Well, I am back at The Thomas Tripp again on Wednesday 12 November. It is always a really great night, with lots of familiar people coming out for my music, with the occasional teasing and friendly heckling that accompanies years of coming to my gigs.

Swanage Blues Festival 2014

October 2nd, 2014

Swanage Blues and Roots Festival 2014

I’m very pleased to be performing 2 acoustic blues sets on 2 nights, at 2 venues:

Friday 3 October at Tawny’s
and
Saturday 4 October at Durlston Castle

It was such a fun and busy blues event to play at in February and is always well attended again at the October version of the blues festival in Swanage, Dorset. Great for locals and visitors! There are a wide variety of 60 gigs going on, by 30 different acts in 15 indoor venues, with some Open Mic and Jam Sessions also.

The dates are throughout 2, 3, 4, 5 October, and all organised by Steve Darrington. Swanage Blues Festivals take place in March and October each year and are known as The Best Blues Parties on the South Coast! It’s times like this I really enjoy being an Isle of Purbeck Musician, fingerstyle guitarist and singer songwriter and the blues is a great way to have the audience listen and get in to the music!

Swanage Blues Festival – expect the unexpected

My take on the blues is set to delight rock and blues fans with sad and mournful to infectious and stomping classics from the great blues musicians and some unexpected moodier roots, folk-esque ballads and dynamic blues riffs.
No two performances are the same, so be prepared to expect the unexpected!

The venue I’m performing in at Swanage Blues Festival is Tawny’s Wine Bar, at 52 High Street, on 8 March 2014. There will be two sittings, 6.00pm and 8.15pm. Conrad Barr, of Solid Air fame, called me a ‘Swanage troubadour‘; I certainly will be at Swanage Blues Festival!

This festival features several different gigs with acclaimed national and international blues musicians playing at a variety of venues around the picturesque seaside town of Swanage, Isle of Purbeck, on the South West coast of England.

The Swanage Blues Festival first started back in 2001 and is now firmly established as one of Dorset’s great musical events. This year the Blues Festival will be on 7, 8, 9 March 2014; starting on Friday lunchtime and going on till late Sunday evening.

There will be 15 indoor venues, 30 top acts and 60 great gigs – and all for a £10.

You can watch a Video from 2013’s Swanage Blues Festival with an interview with Steve Darrington the originator of the festival, Chief organiser and Boogie woogie man.

All sorts of styles are represented such as acoustic, electric, rural and urban blues. There are open mic sessions every afternoon and usually a Blues Steam Train ride plus dancers, street musicians, jam sessions (Saturday and Sunday), buskers, Gospel Service, and workshops.

All the venues are all mapped out, easy to locate and all close together.

It is recommended to book in advance for Tawny’s as they also serve food.

Organisers have had to discontinue the bucket collections due to problems with red tape, health & safety and insurance issues… so they are selling weekend wristbands instead as a pledge and a symbol of the attendees commitment these are priced at £10 for a weekend wristband. Regular fans say they love the friendly atmosphere and the wide range of electric and acoustic music available in the pubs, restaurants and hotel bars.

Frustrated DJ and folkie from his teenage years onwards, this is his first attempt at regular broadcasting.  His taste in music?  Well it all started with Fairport Convention…

Hermitage Folk Playlist – Thursday March 29th 2012

Great to hear Pete Christie’s ”Ballad of an Ordinary Man’ on the same bill as  Fairport Convention.

Pete Christie does an amazing version of Richard Thompson’s ‘Beeswing’.

Great gig shouts for upcoming music events in Market Harborough and Northamptonshire later in the month “…and based on this track would be worth going to see him…”
