Swanage Blues Festival - Pete Christie take on the blues

Swanage Blues Festival – expect the unexpected

My take on the blues is set to delight rock and blues fans with sad and mournful to infectious and stomping classics from the great blues musicians and some unexpected moodier roots, folk-esque ballads and dynamic blues riffs.
No two performances are the same, so be prepared to expect the unexpected!

The venue I’m performing in at Swanage Blues Festival is Tawny’s Wine Bar, at 52 High Street, on 8 March 2014. There will be two sittings, 6.00pm and 8.15pm. Conrad Barr, of Solid Air fame, called me a ‘Swanage troubadour‘; I certainly will be at Swanage Blues Festival!

This festival features several different gigs with acclaimed national and international blues musicians playing at a variety of venues around the picturesque seaside town of Swanage, Isle of Purbeck, on the South West coast of England.

The Swanage Blues Festival first started back in 2001 and is now firmly established as one of Dorset’s great musical events. This year the Blues Festival will be on 7, 8, 9 March 2014; starting on Friday lunchtime and going on till late Sunday evening.

There will be 15 indoor venues, 30 top acts and 60 great gigs – and all for a £10.

You can watch a Video from 2013’s Swanage Blues Festival with an interview with Steve Darrington the originator of the festival, Chief organiser and Boogie woogie man.

All sorts of styles are represented such as acoustic, electric, rural and urban blues. There are open mic sessions every afternoon and usually a Blues Steam Train ride plus dancers, street musicians, jam sessions (Saturday and Sunday), buskers, Gospel Service, and workshops.

All the venues are all mapped out, easy to locate and all close together.

It is recommended to book in advance for Tawny’s as they also serve food.

Organisers have had to discontinue the bucket collections due to problems with red tape, health & safety and insurance issues… so they are selling weekend wristbands instead as a pledge and a symbol of the attendees commitment these are priced at £10 for a weekend wristband. Regular fans say they love the friendly atmosphere and the wide range of electric and acoustic music available in the pubs, restaurants and hotel bars.

Deep South USA meets Deep South UK – Bill Sheffield and Pete Christie

May 21st, 2012

Bill Sheffield and Pete Christie sing an impromptu rendition together of Richard Thompson’s ‘Vincent Black Lightning’.

Bill Sheffield from Georgia USA performs on Pete Christie's set at Portsmouth Hoy on Poole Quay in Dorset

This great night was at Portsmouth Hoy on Poole Quay, in Poole Dorset UK, on Friday 4 May 2012. Authentic Blues musician, Bill Sheffield was over from his home town of Georgia in USA; on a night off, before his UK Tour started and he come by to watch fellow musician Pete Christie’s set.

Bill Sheffield and Pete Christie met up a few years ago at a ‘house jam’; that’s what happens when all your mates are musicians. Bill Sheffield’s nick name of ‘The big bluesman from Atlanta, Georgia, USA’ is quite apt; Bill has the sweetest  and most unexpected booming voice; great to watch in concert.

Pete  Christie wrote a yet to be release instrumental for Bill Sheffield called ‘Bill’s Blues’ but on this occasion Richard Thompson’s ‘Beeswing’ prompted Bill and Pete to wow the audience with ‘Vincent Black Lightning’.

You can catch Bill Sheffield touring with Dave Saunders and Pete Christie  is currently touring around the length and breadth of  UK.

Bob Harris Radio 2 programme; Bob has played two tracks from the album. Folk legend Mike Harding played a track and  raved about the album on Facebook & Twitter, writing ‘My main listen today – Springsteen and Taylor are cheering my day’ … nice to be put in the same sentence as ‘The Boss’.
