Folk on the Stairs Pete Christie Making Waves

May 4th, 2016

Folk on the Stairs

This is the third song from my recent Folk on the Stairs session with Jim Chorley; ‘Making Waves’.

My good friend and musician, Andy Stone, has always enjoyed this song. ‘Making Waves‘ is always slightly changing; I rather enjoyed playing this fingerstyle version on the Lowden guitar for Folk On The Stairs.

Swanage Blues Festival 2014

October 2nd, 2014

Swanage Blues and Roots Festival 2014

I’m very pleased to be performing 2 acoustic blues sets on 2 nights, at 2 venues:

Friday 3 October at Tawny’s
and
Saturday 4 October at Durlston Castle

It was such a fun and busy blues event to play at in February and is always well attended again at the October version of the blues festival in Swanage, Dorset. Great for locals and visitors! There are a wide variety of 60 gigs going on, by 30 different acts in 15 indoor venues, with some Open Mic and Jam Sessions also.

The dates are throughout 2, 3, 4, 5 October, and all organised by Steve Darrington. Swanage Blues Festivals take place in March and October each year and are known as The Best Blues Parties on the South Coast! It’s times like this I really enjoy being an Isle of Purbeck Musician, fingerstyle guitarist and singer songwriter and the blues is a great way to have the audience listen and get in to the music!

Good to perform again in Swanage

Sunday afternoon gigs are always fun; people are relaxed and listen to the music, which all singer-songwriters like! it is a very good excuse to spend your Sunday afternoon is a cosy Isle of Purbeck pub with friends, it makes it more like a mini concert than a pub gig.

The music set will be fairly varied, with some blues, folk and roots, some rock classics and plenty of original material in a fingerstyle guitar technique.

The Red Lion is a traditional pub located in the heart of the Victorian town of Swanage, has a CAMRA award for their wide selection of Real Ales, serve an extensive range of food from snacks through to exciting special dishes in their newly refurbished restaurant and has a large beer garden.

Hope to see you there!

In good company on the Luthier David Oddy website

May 27th, 2013

David Oddy is a Luthier master craftsman

I am very proud that I get to play a handmade sunburst Indian Rosewood Dreadnought David Oddy acoustic guitar everyday.

She is a thing of beauty; visually, ideally suited to my fingerstyle guitar technique and sounds sweet as a nut!

David Oddy and his son Nicholas have a new website and have kindly added me to their ‘Links to Our Friends’ page; I’m in good company with Show of Hands, Martyn Joseph, Flynn Cohen, John Williams, Mark Pidgeon, Ian Walker and Jamie Leigh Malin. Both Steve Knightley and Phil Beer in Show Of Hands are well known for their choice in David Oddy guitars, madolins, mandocello, a cuatro, parlour and other instrument requirements.

It was a great day back in 2004 when I headed down to Newton Abbot, Exeter, Devon, to meet David Oddy in his simple wooden workshop at the bottom of his garden. I have been writing some of my best songs on the David Oddy sunburst Dreadnought (S/No 0704374) ever since. It is such a beautiful guitar to play. In my opinion, when it  comes to the choice of custom versus mass-produced acoustic guitars, I go for custom every time.

David Oddy has had a life-long passion for making acoustic instruments and is one of the best UK guitar-building talents.

Most of the acoustic guitars built by David Oddy are based on classic Martin shape and styles but David Oddy is well known for his own customisation of designs and features such as necks made from five-layer laminates of different woods, for greater neck strength and to enhance the aesthetics of the instrument. David Oddy mostly makes mandolins and guitars but has also turned his talent to making South American cuatros, violins, obscure 12-stringed Portuguese instruments and resonator guitars.

WEST COUNTRY SONGWRITERS’ CIRCLE SPECIAL

FEATURING: PETE CHRISTIE / NICKY SWANN / JINDER

1 FEBRUARY 2013

BEST OF KONTRA – WEST COUNTRY SONGWRITERS’ CIRCLE SPECIAL

Highly acclaimed, sensationally good singer-songwriter and acoustic guitarist, who plays from the heart and sings from the soul. A master craftsman who is the equal of the many household name guitarists and musicians he has guested with in over 40 years of performing, he was recently described as being “a cross between Pete Townsend, Mark Knopfler and Richard Thompson, but with a great voice; though, until now, without the fame!” Playing his own uniquely powerful style of acoustic fingerstyle guitar, Pete’s songs are original, contemporised anglicana roots, with a mix of rock, folk and country, swinging from achingly beautiful, sparse, haunting accompaniments, to explosive, almost neo-flamenco rhythms.

NICKY SWANN

One of the very best of the new generation of female singer-songwriters, this powerful, original and versatile singer has achieved critical acclaim with sublime original songs that are rooted in Americana traditions but can just as easily encompass cool summer jazz, rock ‘n’ roil, and folksy ballads. Her first CD received ecstatic reviews in 2010, and she was a complete knockout when she played Kontra Roots Club earlier this year. A great storyteller and a passionate performer, Nicky is surely heading for the top.

Pete Christie is part of the Songwriters' circle

A solo tour de force, this most persuasive and passionate of troubadors was originally lead singer and songwriter with The Mercurymen (a band tipped for the top by the likes of Coldplay and Brian Wilson). However, abandoning the comfort of a major record deal to cut his own unique path through the solo acoustic landscape, Jinder has become one of the very best singer-songwriters the UK has to offer, with a string of critically lauded albums and hypnotic, blistering performances. With beautiful, red-dirt Americana songs that are lyrically and musically exceptionally visual, Jinder is a great talent who is going places… and don’t let him tell you otherwise!

The Finedon Sessions

THE FINEDON SESSIONS present quarterly acoustic roots concerts at the Finedon Community Centre, a superb venue situated in the town of Finedon, Northants. They are usually held on the first Fridays in February, May, August and November, and feature top name acts from the world of folk, blues and roots, plus supports from the cream of the UK’s up and coming acoustic talent.

Finedon Community Centre is a converted methodist church, and the first floor concert hall, with its high wood vaulted ceiling, excellent acoustics and atmosphere, is recognised as one of the finest in the east midlands for acoustic music.

The concerts are organised by Kontra Roots Club (see Top Friends and blog) and the Finedon Community Centre committee. Tickets are very modestly priced, usually at £8, and can either be bought on the door or pre-booked by phoning 01933 398377

‘Guitar guru’ headlined at Kontra Roots, Northampton

March 10th, 2012

What a great compliment from the organisers at Kontra Roots in Northampton, to be called a “Guitar Guru”.

Kontra is at Kennedy’s Bar in Irthlingborough Road, Finedon and run by Kevin Buxton and Geoff Bland; great guys who make music their life and help share it with others.

KONTRA ROOTS is an informal non-profit making organisation dedicated to promoting quality acoustic roots music in the Northamptonshire area and beyond. It founded and organises the legendary KONTRA ROOTS CLUB, as well as THE FINEDON SESSIONS concert venue, and in addition supplies acts for several first-rate venues in the area.

a collage of all the musicians who played on the same bill as Pete Christie

Musicians who played at  Kontra Roots at Club Kennedy’s Bar in Northampton on 27.01.2012  were Fred’s House, from Cambridge; some beautiful guitar playing from Jonny Martin; Kevin Buxton on his expressive harmonicas; Paul de Gallier being subtle on the cajon; Headline was Pete Christie – Purbeck singer-songwriter Folk Musician from Dorset.

To top it off, just down the road they have the best chippie in Northampton and Kevin Buxton extended his personal hospitality to an out of town itinerant balladeer, for the night. Thank you!

It’s all about the great people you meet whilst at a music event and here were some of the finest, audience and musicians, all in one room.

Luckily, there are 3 more special upcoming music events being organised by Kevin Buxton, that Pete Christie will be attending, in April. This time Paul Liddell will also be there, instead of being spoken kindly about by the Kontra Roots audience.

Pete Christie and Paul Liddell have been on the same bill a few times over the years and it is always great fun.
